Oimachi | Sandaime Murakami: An Unagi Haven for Sake Lovers

Shop: Sandaime Murakami / Price: ~3,000 JPY / Area: Oimachi

Tucked away in the far end of Oimachi’s atmospheric drinking district, Sandaime Murakami is a rare gem that treats eel as the ultimate drinking snack. While Oimachi is surprisingly competitive for unagi, this spot stands out for its relaxed, izakaya-style approach to high-quality eel dishes.

🍶 Refined Eel Delicacies for Sake Lovers

The standout for me was the liver nikogori (aspic). It has a subtle bitterness reminiscent of sea snail that makes it an absolutely perfect match for sake. It’s an sophisticated start to a meal that proves this isn’t your average “eat and go” unagi restaurant; it’s a place to linger and enjoy the nuance of the ingredients.

🍢 Variety and Textures: The Kushi-yaki Platter

I ordered the 4-piece skewer platter, which included liver, fin, kabayaki (grilled with sauce), and shirayaki (grilled without sauce). It’s a great way to experience how different textures can be coaxed out of the same fish. The fin and kabayaki were highlights—rich and flavorful—though I found the shirayaki to be a bit underwhelming compared to the rest of the lineup. Still, the overall quality and price point make this a very honest, value-driven experience.

💬 Verdict

I would definitely come back to Sandaime Murakami. It’s a great spot for those who want to enjoy eel in a casual, spirited setting. Note that they close at 9:00 PM, so make sure to get there early if you want to enjoy a full evening of drinks and skewers!
