Jacques Genin | Is this legendary Parisian chocolatier worth it?

Jacques Genin is a name synonymous with legendary French chocolate, but my recent experience proved that even world-renowned masters can be hit-or-miss. While the legendary chocolatier himself remains an inspiring figure of constant innovation, the actual tasting experience revealed some surprising inconsistencies.

🍫 The Standout: Fresh Mint Bonbons and Ice Cream

If you are planning to visit, don’t get distracted by the fancy assortment boxes. The absolute highlights were the mint-infused bonbon chocolat and the house-made ice cream. The mint flavor is exceptionally clean and vibrant, cutting through the rich, high-quality cacao without feeling artificial or medicinal. It’s a masterclass in balance.

⚖️ The Reality Check: Hit-or-Miss Selections

I picked up an assortment of nine bonbons and some fruit jellies (reminiscent of the famous ‘Saika no Houseki’), but the experience was decidedly mixed. Beyond the mint and ice cream, the rest of the collection felt surprisingly ordinary for a chocolatier of this stature. It’s frustrating to find such disparity in quality within the same display case, especially when you are paying a premium price for the reputation of the brand.

💬 Verdict

I admire Genin’s dedication to his craft, but my future visits will be strictly strategic. I will stick to the items that deliver—the mint bonbons and the ice cream—and skip the general gift boxes. Highly recommended for true mint chocolate lovers, but proceed with caution if you are expecting every single piece in a large box to blow your mind.
